Shanghai Art Space - Stella So & Simon Go

The presentation is rough – digital and vinyl prints – but the subject matter is essential viewing, both Simon Go (“Old Shops”) and Stella So (from Joint Publishing) have newly published books to coincide with this exhibition. Closes on 20 July so hurry or…. just buy the books.

Ooi Botos Gallery – Wai Leng Tey

Subject matter is good: documentary photography of the demise of the wonderful old back streets of North Point; unfortunately the prints are overly dark, over-sized and tighter editing would give a better presentation.

Wattis Fine Art – Old Hong Kong Photographs

Many of these photographs have been seen before, but there is one superb albumen print of the Wellington Street/Queen’s Road intersection circa 1900 and some unusual panorama diptychs. Always fascinating to see old Hong Kong.

Para/Site Art Space - Franz Ackermann

Solid use of Para/Site’s space – especially effective is the re-painted pink wall installation in the back-room. The small mind-map paintings are varied and badly lit – with glimpses of brilliance.

Hong Kong Museum of Art - Digit@logue

A little flawed, but Digit@logue is a milestone digital / electronic / new media art exhibition for Hong Kong. Gives a good overview of new media art and it is ‘important’ because the ostensibly conservative Museum of Art did it!

Hong Kong Museum of Art – The Art of Huang Bore

This is what the Museum does well: traditional Chinese painting and culture. Beautifully presented exhibition by oft-overlooked landscape artist Huang Bore; who died in 1968.
